What is an elliptical cross trainer?
An elliptical cross trainer is an aerobic machine that combines eliminates of walking/running and stair-stepping. It is much easier on the joints than other cardiovascular machines and can give a person a light, moderate, or intense workout. It also can work the upper and lower body simultaneously.

Elliptical trainers are those ubiquitous machines found at gyms that have two pedals connected to a wheel by metal arms. It takes a little bit of coordination to operate an elliptical trainer, but once the basic motion is learned, it is one of the easiest machines to use, especially if there is concern about stress on the joints.
To begin exercising on the machine, just step onto the pedals, which will give gently under weight. If the machine has handles, grab these for support. Next, push down and forward with one foot in a sort of standing pedal motion while relaxing the other foot. The pedal pressed will begin to churn forward, while the other one will move backward. The handles will also begin moving in a back and forth motion. This is the basic operation of the machine.

The Spirit Elliptical Trainer has pedals which move on arm like mechanisms, causing the front ‘wheel’ of the machine to turn. The resistance is controlled either by magnetic resistance set by the user or a computer controlled braking system which is also set by the user.
The track usually refers to the pedals which the user stands on. Over time, the mechanism may move out of alignment, resulting in off center wear and tear on the pedals themselves. This is a mechanical issue which can be repaired simply by a user with a few simple hand tools. Before beginning any repair, it is best to consult your owners manual and always remember to disable any power source prior to beginning the work.
Once you have disconnected the power source, remove the screws of the housing on one side. Some models may have an adjustment screw which allows you to adjust the movement of the pedals gradually. Be sure to check for alignment as you move the alignment to avoid over adjusting. If there is no alignment screw, it is likely that your owner’s manual will direct you as to how to adjust this. However, when in doubt you should always consult a professional.
