How Many Days a Week Should I Workout on an Elliptical Machine ?

calendar workoutOver the years, it seems as if the popularity of the traditional treadmill has been overtaken by elliptical trainers. When you visit your local health club or when you stop by the gym, you will see that a huge portion of the area is devoted to elliptical trainers.

What these exercise machines do is give you a low-impact workout which is similar to the one that you will have when using the treadmill. However, what makes elliptical trainers so special is the fact that you will be able to glide your way through your workout session.

Read on to find out more about the benefits of using elliptical trainers, what you need to look for when buying this type of a fitness equipment, and the ideal number of days that you should be using this type of an exercise machine.

Benefits of Using Elliptical Trainers

First, let us take a look at the multitude of benefits that you will get to enjoy by using elliptical trainers. This type of exercise machine has almost overcome the popularity of treadmills due to a number of reasons.

One is that they provide an individual with the chance to undergo a low-impact workout. Unlike treadmills which usually only work on only one part of the body, elliptical trainers work on both the upper and lower part of the body.

Health-wise, the benefits of using elliptical trainers include the following:

  • This type of workout is much more ‘forgiving’ to the joints of the elderly.
  • With the help of the elliptical motion produced when using the machine, the stress and strain on your legs during a workout will be reduced.
  • Osteoporosis can be prevented with the help of elliptical trainers which allow users to perform weight-bearing exercises.

A Quick Buying Guide for Elliptical Trainers

When looking for elliptical trainers, there are several things that you need to consider. What is your budget for buying the equipment? Sure, there might be low-priced models out there but if you plan to use them for moderate to vigorous workouts on a daily basis, it is much better to invest in sturdier, high-end models.

Second, check on the brand of elliptical trainer that you will buy. Consult the online reviews that will give you an idea about the best brands and models of elliptical machines that you can get.

Finally, check on the features included with the elliptical trainer. There are models which have an MP3 dock, a small TV screen that you can watch while sweating it out, as well as the basic features like the foot pedals, hand bars and programs which will help modify your workout.

How Many Days a Week Should I Ideally Use Elliptical Trainers?

Now, what is the ideal frequency that you should be using your elliptical trainers? Take a look at the list of important points that you need to remember regarding the numbers of days that you should be using the elliptical trainers on a weekly or daily basis:

If you are over the age of 40, it is best to consult with a physician first if you can safely use elliptical trainers. This is especially true if you have underlying health conditions or heart problems.

If you have no health problems at all, you can maximize the fitness results of elliptical trainers. Basically, a 30-minute workout on the machine will help you burn about 300 calories. If you want to lose one pound for every week, you can do so by spending about 60 minutes a week on the elliptical trainer.

For better workout results, you can spend an hour doing the cardio exercises using the elliptical trainer – and mixing it up with other types of exercises.

To up the ante in your workout, you can ditch using the elliptical handles, increase your speed and use higher resistance levels.

All in all, the frequency of your workout sessions using an elliptical trainer depends on your personal fitness goals. By following a regular workout routine, you are bound to become the best and fittest that you have ever been in a long time, with the help of the oh-so-innovative elliptical trainer exercise machines.

How can that be? If you burn 300 calories in 30 minutes, you burn 600 calories in 6o minutes. But, a lb. of fat is 4086 calories!

At best, you’d lose a little more than 2 oz. of fat!

Hi Harald,

1 lb of Fat is 3500 calories.

Considering the average calories burned during a 30 minutes of Elliptical training (near 300-400 calories depending on sex and weight)

To lose 1 lb a week You need to do nearly 1 hour of elliptical a day (nearly 500-600 calories a day for 7 days) and that’s what I said in the article above.

What’s wrong with You?
